Steve Porter of Porter’s Trophy Whitetails and his traveling display hit the road September 21 for the first school visit in Wisconsin. “It’s going to be exciting to bring the bucks to the students at the schools,” Porter said. “It’s never been done before in Wisconsin. It could impact a lot of kids for the outdoors and hunting.”
Wisconsin schools on the tour include Colby, Abbotsford, Stanley/Boyd, Thorp and Gilman. As part of the tour, Porter said, he’ll have his trophy buck trailer outside of the participating schools and present 45-minute to hour-long presentations on whitetail behavior, antler development and other aspects of deer biology to the students.
Porter, who raises deer on his farm in Kittson County in northwestern Minnesota, says he typically travels with three bucks in his display and has enough deer that he’ll be able to rotate which ones will be on the road. One that’s sure to be a favorite, he says, is a 3-year-old 21-pointer that goes by the name of “Shifty.”
The display provides considerable educational benefits. “The keys are twofold. One, it’s an opportunity to see some very impressive animals; and two, to learn about not just how antlers grow, but to learn about how hunting is a very intimate part of deer management.”
Besides presenting to the schools, there will be two evening events. The first will be at the Abbotsford school on Tuesday September 22nd at 7:00 pm and the second will be at the Stanley-Boyd school on Wednesday September 23rd at 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to stop in during the day at the schools and at the evening presentations. You will find more info online at www.porterwhitetails.com.
